IDP SUPPORT PROJECT –ABAJI CAMP

The pre-assessment on the Internally Displaced Persons’ Camp took place on the 2nd of May 2015.
The cyberLogik Foundation alongside other NGO’S like Bring Back Our Girls Group, LikeMinds Project, Victims of Violence, Volunteer for Peace Project and F.R.E.E. took off around 10 am on the 17th of May 2015 from the unity Fountain, Maitama, Abuja to the IDP camp in Abaji with 30 volunteers.
On arrival, there were about 150 persons from Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states mostly women and children all seated and waiting for the arrival for the volunteers. Their reasons for being in Abaji differedWhile some were lucky to have relatives there and saw Abaji as a safe and cheaper place for their survival, others see it as a better place to settle down. There were organized Police officers who professionally assisted us throughout the visit.
When IDP first arrived Abaji, the elderly ones amongst them presented themselves to the security agencies and the leaders of the Abaji community. They submitted the names of the arrived IDP’s for record.
On the visit, members of the support group went with various Foods for the families including milk and nappies for 15 toddlers, toiletries, Clothing for everyone, mattresses, mosquito nets, medical supplies and education materials. CyberLogik foundation offered to give scholarships to about 46 children at the Primary and Secondary levels.

The IDPs narrated the horrific experiences they had back at their states which was all pathetic. They queued to receive their relief items. We observed that most of them were making their ownnormal living and living normal lives until the insurgency escalated.

Of note was a case of the mother of six children who lost her husband during one of the attacks by the Boko Haram insurgents in her presence and how she miraculously survived with the kids. Many of them witnessed the terrible execution of their loved ones and the kidnap of their young daughters who have not been seen till date. Some mothers still have hope of seeing them again and others have long given up hope.

For Shame! Police brutality and Human Rights by Amir Ado

On my way home earlier today I had the misfortune of being caught up in some type of raid operation by some policemen accompanied by cane wielding thugs that appeared to be under the influence of drugs unknown. The mission was apparently to "arrest" black marketers around the area.

For me it all started while I was in a mosque in wuse II, my friend said his eyes were burning. I quickly understood what he meant because my eyes were on fire the next second. I looked around for an explanation and I heard someone cry out TEAR GAS!". We moved away from the place till our eyes stopped burning.

We followed a shortcut that got us out to the main road where we saw those armed men moving around with guns at the ready. I first noticed that the thugs were with the security men when one of them "arrested" someone was who was clearly a black marketer and brought him over to the security man.

Just when we thought the coast was clear, we heard two very easily identifiable gunshots. I later discovered (rather chillingly) that each of those gunshots reportedly led to the death of two individuals, a man and a teenager. The third victim was a lady. The death of these three Nigerian citizens is a tragedy. One on his way to the mosque after ablution, one apparently trying to earn money from helping people park their cars and one just literally just passing by. Serious questions must be asked because the death of our fellow country men is not the death of chickens.

Who authorized live ammunition in arguably the busiest and most densely populated area of Abuja ? Who authorized tear gas in such an area ? What were the objectives of the raid and did the planners consider the safety of civilians in planning ? For what crime were three(or more) Nigerian citizens killed for ? Why should black marketers be attacked, have their fuel confiscated ? For many Nigerians, these people are the only reason they can still go to work or school since we are being denied fuel from the stations. If you want them to stop selling fuel on the sides cut off their demand by ensuring there is fuel in the stations, if you don't want them hanging around then empower them! Educate them! Employ them! For God sakes no one grows up thinking "I want to sell black market fuel". If they have to resort to that then it is because their government has not given them work or opportunities for school. But to cheat people by failing to give them opportunities then raiding them and confiscating their source of food amounts to a betrayal of trust and a breach of the social contract of harmony that should be the norm of a serious society. And then to top it all off, physical attacks have been added to economic attacks.

We must demand accountability, the change we want will not come until we hold our government accountable for every action. We must do this for our own sakes as well. The only reason it is not anyone of us among the people hit by the stray bullets is because God has willed that you will live another day. So please add your voices to this important call. It is a civil responsibility to ensure accountability. If the citizens don't do it then who will ?

This incident is conclusive proof of the inability of our security men and women to succeed in their most solemn duty and that is the protection of lives and properties. Why on earth will anyone agree to sell us weapons ? To even entertain that thought is ridiculous. That goes to a broader point that no one will help us until we help ourselves. There is no foreign solution to the Nigerian problem and we will only solve them when we look internally, fix the rot and make our security agents worthy of the great uniform.

Clearly the incoming government has its hands full, the work at hand is enormous. Despite that, President(elect) Mohammad Buhari must understand that we will watch closely and see if he will improve on human rights. Let us agree for the sake of avoiding arguments that the retired general's record on this particular issue is not too great.

We hope to see GMB the democrat and would like to believe his days as a soldier are behind him. With that hopefully we will see an improvement on human rights, there is no doubt that the task ahead is big. I think only God and God alone knows the number of wrongfully jailed men and women. Some of them offended "big men" who ask them to be thrown in jail and forgotten. Some cannot afford the bribe styled as "bail money", while others are mentally unstable and so are left to rot in jail cells as opposed to what would be done in any serious country i.e. Taking them to a mental facility and giving them treatment.

We hear stories that 70% of our jail population is "awaiting trail". I have seen pictures of more than one over crowded prison in Nigeria, leaving them places of congestion, sweat, suffering, infection and possible mental illness instead of a correctional facilities that turns criminals into educated, clean and productive members of the society.
police brutality in Nigeria

These are the small things in the democratic system that we tend to underestimate because we cannot see clearly the relevance. However, change is hard and it does come slow. All we need to focus on is making sure we are providing a solid foundation for it today so that we will be ready when it comes. Fundamental human rights are not called "fundamental" for no reason, they are the minimum requirement and a Global standard that cannot be ignored. These rights are said to be "inalienable" because they are "self evident" and "God given", no man or government should ever attempt to take it away. I hope this incident is fully investigated and the exactly individuals responsible must be identified and made an example of. This will send a clear message to the entire world that Nigeria does not tolerate such trigger happy security operatives, and cares about its citizens. Lets show the world we will uphold justice and human rights (maybe they'll sell us weapons then...)

A&A footwear: Shoes for the successful

Introduction

A&A Footwear is a shoe company started by Ahmed Umara and his partner in March 2015. We provide an upscale selection of shoes.
From the very beginning, we were clear that we have to deliver quality shoes in terms of product quality and upscale design at affordable price. Keeping it simple is one of our main objectives. Everyone has their own taste and we found out pretty quick that we need to provide shoes to consumers looking for ‘affordable’ and ‘different’.
As stated by Manish Bhalla (FATbit founder), “People buy from you when they trust you.”

Challenges faced
One of our biggest challenges is to have a shoe line for a wide range of customers while still keeping it simple. We interacted with our customers and we found out that your customers will give you the best ideas. Listening to what they want and the issues they have is the best way to consistently improve your product and bring in more sales.
One of the challenges we faced and are still facing is the condition of the environment. With high degrees of stress and uncertainty, a lot of entrepreneurs do not have appropriate means and support from the government and individuals for them to be able to be unique and stand out.
We believe the future of this country is to have home grown business minded people that can represent, both at home and internationally, and help with the economy of the country.
We both have previously ventured into different types of businesses trying as much as possible not to repeat our mistakes but to learn from them and create a brand for everyone.
Where we see ourselves in the next five years
The company’s five-year mission is to become one of the leading branded shoe designers of simple and affordable trend-setting footwear. Our long-term vision is to become synonymous with unique footwear styling and to expand our presence to fashion capitals around the world.

What piece of advice would you give to someone starting up?
We have a lot brilliant young entrepreneurs and our advice for them is to have confidence in yourself and your ability. Always care about what you do and maintain a passion for what you are trying to do. A very important point we will like to make is: do your research well on what you want and do not let anyone tell you it can’t be done, knowing you might get criticized by people (many of which will be your own friends and family). Lastly, and probably most importantly, you must be able and willing to work HARD and never give up.

THE HEART AT WORK By Ruby Ogbiti

He was crying but I was too distracted by the bruises on my body. They seemed alive and throbbed painfully, sapping my energy.
He had done this.”

Black.
That was all I could see for a while. The pain seemed to numb all my senses, moving up slowly till it was everywhere. Then I opened my eyes and saw Buky. God! She was so happy with Tayo. He was the only one who ever loved her. He whispered something into her ear but I couldn't really hear from where I stood but it sounds like he said "I love you".
His smile seemed to create the warmth that had eluded her for many years. He had saved her. He was her messiah. She looked back into his eyes and for a moment they seemed to sparkle. She knew it was true. So she looked back into his eyes and for a moment they seemed to sparkle and with a quick breath she said "I love you".

Where was the pain coming from!?
As I opened my eyes Tayo stared back at me with wild eyes. His fingers jabbed into my arms as he held on tightly. He was crying but I was too distracted by the bruises on my body. They seemed alive and throbbed painfully, sapping my energy.
He had done this.
He kept on muttering something. Couldn't really hear but it sounded like he said "I love you Buky". I looked into his eyes desperately trying to find that sparkle. It was there.....somewhere. so slowly slipping again into unconsciousness, i said with a quick breath "I love you too".

Black.

HE PROPOSES

BEELOVED FRAGRANCES

BeeLoved fragrances is the love child of the creative perfumer Habibah H. Sanusi. In a yet untapped industry in Nigeria, she has dared to be a forerunner of signature scents from, and in Nigeria. BeeLoved Fragrances which started in the United Kingdom has been in business for six years with its successful flagship fragrance – Beloved, which translates to Habibah in Arabic. The vision of the founder is to create unique and inspired fragrances for its clients. She believes that “scents are the olfactory gateway of our emotions, and emotions are always deeply personal”, and by creating personal fragrances, BeeLoved becomes a part of each client’s life. “I hope to inspire people through the art of scents”, says Habibah, and give people a deeper understanding of how instrumental the sense of smell is in our everyday lives.

With its flagship store opening on the 9th of May, 2015 at the Valley Mall, Wuse 2, Abuja, BeeLoved will be the first store in Abuja to cater to individuals who want to create a scent that is both unique and personal. To achieve this, BeeLoved Fragrances will have consultations with prospective clients and go through what she calls “the process”. Here clients are exposed to a wide array of scents and fragrances which include lavender, bergamot, lilies, musk and so much more. The base scent for BeeLoved is Lavender which the founder says comes from her love for the colour purple.

In addition to the fragrance, BeeLoved Store will also have for sale, leather handbags and wallets for women from the Sienna brand based in Dubai, U.A.E. The motivation of having this franchise is to make real leather goods more available and affordable. According to Habibah, “Anyone who appreciates quality also knows that it does not always have to be ridiculously expensive!”

BeeLoved Fragrances has created a niche in a market that is virgin in Nigeria, and its future is bright with plans to fully industrialize by producing fragrances from scents that are sourced locally. For now, BeeLoved will keep the enthusiastic approach to scents and hopefully draw the attention of Nigerians to the sensory world of smell.
