The Samira Sanusi Sickle Cell Foundation was started by Samira Sanusi and her sister who are both sickle cell survivors. It is an organization that aims to provide awareness for the disease itself and to draw attention to the plight of people, especially those in rural communities that have the sickle cell disease. It raises funds for people who need transplants and other life saving surgeries.
It also runs a campaign that encourages people to find out if they carry the sickle cell or not and whether or not their prospective partner does. This simple measure can spare children a lifetime of agony and pain. In fact, genotype awareness is one of the best ways to stop the disease in its tracks and create the possibility of a sickle cell free generation.
The challenges faced by the SSSCFOUNDATION are mainly financial. The organization requires a lot of funds to carry out tasks that help its cause such as awareness campaigns and funding surgery for those who cannot afford it. It is largely self funded but it does depend on donations from the public as well.
Capital City Magazine truly believes in the good work that this foundation and its team does. We thank them for their efforts on behalf of the millions of men, women and children living with the sickle cell disease. We see them as an inspiration and a beacon of hope, and we will continue to support them in anyway we can.
