Women/Girls in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) EDUCATION

STEM Education defines education and capacity building in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics based subjects. STEM education plays a central role in contemporary society, with the potential to improve lives in a multitude of ways and advance national development. Access to the fruits of science at the individual and collective levels, however, lies primarily with those endowed with scientific knowledge and skills. Increasingly, those with the greatest understanding of science and technology have access to the best information, opportunities and jobs around the world
All over the world, from free and advanced societies to once “tagged” conservative societies, more women are being encouraged and supported to take on these subjects. It has been a convention and norm over the years to relegate or ostracize women from male dominated professions and careers to less rigorous careers especially in stereotyped societies with cultural biases like ours in Nigeria, with a flashlight on the North-eastern, North-Central, and North-Western Nigeria. Private/Government/Family institutions pay less focus and investment in women as they are seen to be home-makers and domestic helpers. The result of this has led to more pressure on the male counterpart, the immediate community as well as the government.

The world has changed within the blink of an eye and now moving at astronomical and exponential speeds. Once conservative and stereotypic societies are having a paradigm shift and embracing Science and Technology than ever before. More attention is moving towards huge investments in women getting involved in Science and Technology based career which is seen as a male dominated field. The success and wellbeing of a society and community is dependent on the success of each member of the family.
Nigeria with a huge population of over 180 million out of which 69 million are women and girls; their exclusion from the generation and application of scientific knowledge represents a tremendous waste of human potential. The country will serve itself best by Individuals, families, corporate bodies and Government making STEM education a top priority as well as invest greatly in young girls. These will serve as a gradual step towards making our immediate society and community prosperous as each individual (male or female becomes a contributor to our local economy). However, Nigerians are beginning to point to role models that have broken cultural barriers like (Fatima Abba Gwadabe as the first commercial Pilot from Kano state, Ruqayya Suleiman also first female pilot from Katsina State, Salamat Aliyu, Nigeria and West Africa’s first female Neurosurgeon from Kogi state)
They have made giant strides in STEM based professions, impacted on their immediate family as a support, economic contributor to their immediate community and role model to young girls who looks up to a hero.
More initiatives should be introduced to support young girls in taking up STEM subjects and careers include STEM Mentorship programs, Showcasing female role models (“If I can do it, you can also do it”), More Scholarships and Funding Opportunities, Awards, recognition and Fellowships amongst others.
Quadrev Fasaha Hub is playing its role in engaging girls at the early primary and junior secondary when attitudes about learning are formed through its Quadrev creative computing outreach program, Quadrev Girls Stem education program, Mentorship programs and Yearly boot campsQuadrev Fasahar High impact Internship program in Computing - Software Development-Applications, Robotics, Embedded Systems, and Electronics. This isto inspire the next generation of girls/women early enough to take up science & technology based careers in Biotechnology, Computer programming, Big Data Analytics, Mechatronics, Medical engineering and Medicine. You can read more on our programs at www.quadrev.com/creativecomputingprogram.  or enrol your kids  to participate in our August Creative Computing Boot Camp in Kano send an email to (info@quadrev.com)

XL Spiff: UK based Nigerian international artist

XL is a singer, songwriter, producer and instrumentalist. XL started music from a very young age by teaching himself how to play drums and then started playing drums in church and school. This is where XL discovered his love for music and production and then took a further step in his musical journey by converting his detail for sound into production and laying his vocal on any beats produced.

XL is majorly influenced by reggae music, afrobeats, RnB which are the sounds he grew up listening to. XL is a massive music lover and appreciates all genres of music and he reflects it in his music by creating a sound which combines all his favourite music genres. XL' music is influenced by the likes of chronic, burna boy, protoje, bob marley, fela kuti,  and much more. XL's style could be described as a blend of reggae, dancehall, Afrobeats and a touch of R&B.

XL has been making his own sounds for almost 6 years and started releasing music about 2 years ago.  XL's artistic talent soon gained major popularity and attention, therefore leading him to sign a deal with Black Pearl Inc as his management/record label. XL has since taken a step further to breakthrough  the industry by releasing various hit singles. XL released "mistakenly" in the beginning of the year which gained hundreds of thousands of views/likes on social medias, airplay on radio and tv stations within the UK and Nigeria. XL also followed up with audio singles for his fans with "money talks" which was repeatedly played on Bbc radio.

XL's work has also caught the attention of international artists such as gyptian, w3strn, whom all loved his sound. As a result, XL was opening act for gyptian during his UK tour and also for W3strn. This also helped XL to create an afrobeats remix of WSTRN's number one hit single "IN2" which was verbally approved by W3strn for release because they loved XL's  afrobeats remix of the song.

QUADREV: A Revolution In Creative Computing

Quadrev Creative Computing Outreach Program

Science and Technology plays a major role in contemporary society with potential to improve lives in diverse ways. Considering the role Kano plays to all the northern states as the “Lagos of the North”, the exigency to invest massively in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) cannot be over-emphasized, if the northern part of the country must progress and catch up with the rest of the world. There is an urgent need to encourage northern kids/youths to pursue career paths in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) as well as understanding the opportunities that are available to students of math and science.
To this end, the Quadrev Creative computing outreach program was created as an extension of Quadrev Fasaha Hub’s Educational and community development outreach program in North-east, North-west and North-central Nigeria, to inspire, empower and expose kids/youths between ages 6 to 18+ years to become creative engineers at an early age i.e. help them to develop creative skills as they grow and create challenges that spark their imagination through creative computing/ (STEM EDUCATION) Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

Ahmad Aminu Idris is the Lead, Technical Trainer at Quadrev creative Computing Outreach Programs. He specializes in embedded systems design automation with special skills in Power electronics, Digital systems, C programming, MATLAB, systems engineering, VHDL, Analogue and digital electronics, Radio frequency, Electrical Distribution, Advanced Communication Systems. He holds a joint Honors (B.Eng.) Electronics/Communications Engineering from the University of Birmingham, England with Lab stints in Beijing, China. He had his primary education in the city of Kano, and Secondary at Air Force Military School (AFMS) Jos.

Ahmed’s motivation lies in giving Kids in Northern Nigeria an early start in creative computing and spur their creativity to solve the needs for our immediate environment e.g. constructing and making gadgets smarter with a range of sensors for detecting things like humidity, temperature, pulse, colour, and carbon monoxide, how code could make characters move around a screen and make them talk all together. We help design programs and kits that help kids between age (6-18+yrs) provoke their curiosity and creativity and play to invent and re-invent the future. Our special needs programs span across Quadrev Girls Stem education program, Quadrev Fasahar High impact Internship program in Computing - Software Development-Applications, Robotics, Embedded Systems, and Electronics.
